Chamisso (1781-1838) was a German poet and scientist/botanist) of French ancestry who traveled with the Russian-German Lt. Otto von Kotzebue around the world on the “Rurik” which docked in Manila Bay in 1817. He then made an exploration trip to the Taal volcano and the Cavite/Laguna area. Blumentritt, in one of his letters to José Rizal mentioned Chamisso and his travels to the Philippines. The outstanding quality and large number of ca. 140 Choris’ drawings, published as coloured lithographies, by such a young artist of German-Russian parentage, created a sensation in Paris, Berlin and St. Petersburg at the time.
