China and the Chinese in the Philippines – Art of Past Centuries

The Chinese have played a role in the Philippines even before Magellan set foot on this archipelago.
From the early Spanish days where they were confined to the other side of the Pasig in order to separate
them from today’s Intramuros, till the days of the Americans arrived – their influence in Philippine society
and their ability to adapt have remained topics for scholars and amateurs alike.

This Sale Exhibit shows the many facets of Chinese life in the country, as seen through artistic European eyes,
from the early years of the 17th Century till the end of the 19th Century,
sometimes favourably, sometimes not so. At times biased but at other occasions with amusement, wonder and authenticity.
A number of out of print books on the same topic complements the Show.

Exhibit Period: 6 October – 6 November 2011
