The Filipiniana Book Guild has happily selected for reprinting two books written by American authors about the Philippines at the turn of the century: Le Roy’s Philippine Life in Town and Country and Steven’s Yesterdays in the Philippines. Although the titles suggest a similarity in coverage, the reader will find that they greatly differ. The former is a scholarly inquiry; the latter, a little more than a genial traveler’s report of things seen. Again, Stevens wrote before the outbreak of the revolution against Spain and Le Roy, after the establishment of American civil government in the Islands.
