RARE view from the first edition of ‘Borneo and the Indian Archipelago, with Drawings of Costumes and Scenery’, published by Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, London.
Frank Marryat (1826-1855) lived a short life as a sailor, artist, and author. These drawings were made as a 17-year-old midshipman during his trip on HMS Samarang in 1843 which also touched on the Philippines. It was the last Samarang trip of Sir Edward Belcher, sailing through Singapore, Hongkong and Macao.

Condition

hand-coloured sepia lithograph, with paper crease and repaired tear at top right corner, small paper loss at bottom left corner, water stains along left margin, all not affecting plate, light paper toning, cleaned.
