Description

original hand-colour lithograph, RARISSIMA. Stunning first view from ‘Galerie Royale de Costumes: Costumes de L’Oceanie’; pl. 1 (of 10).

Aubert was one of many 19th century publishing firms utilizing lithography to provide the mass public with images of travel, fashions, and topical events. The ‘Galerie Royale de Costumes’ series, published beginning in 1842, included over 250 renderings of men and women in regional dress from Europe and other continents. Each section was dedicated to a specific nation. Due to their large size, their beauty and quality of rendition, the 10 engravings of the Philippines have become a priority collectible and as a result have been almost impossible to find in the market over the past decades, especially in this splendid condition. Pierre-Charles Comte (1823 – 1895) was a French painter.
