Map, French edition, from ‘Description de L’Univers – De L’Asie’. Allain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) was a soldier and engineer, he later graduated into the service of the King of France as “maitre de mathematiques”. Mallet published a number of works in the latter part of the 17th Century of which the ” Description de l’Univers” is the most notable and the most extensive. The work was published in several editions, this example is from the 1st edition published in Paris.
The print consists of 3 parts: a decorative cartouche, the map of the Philippines, and the Sea Battle between Van Noort and de Morga at the mouth of Manila Bay in 1600.
