copper engraving.

EXTREMELY RARE map showing Marianas and Philippines from ‘Der Neue Welt-Bott..’ [Jesuit letters]; from ‘Allerhand So Lehr-als Geist-reiche Brief, Schrifften, und Reis-Beschreibungen…’; 4 parts in 1 vol., pl. 13, no. 4, The legend at the bottom of the map lists the names of the various islands of the Marianas, first edition.
This highly interesting very early map shows the area of Jesuit missionary tasks from the Philippines eastward; it shows Luzon “Lucon”, names Manila, and is marked as “Philippinae Insulae”. It also shows Taiwan (Formosa), with the main feature being the Marianas but to their South, the map shows many small “conjectured” islands, described as “Conjectur de Insulis 32 de… P. Paulus Klein” who was stationed in Manila for several decades and their Jesuit Provincial from 1708-1710. He was the author of several Botanical Works, among others.
