…Jagor as the most detailed observer who did the most valuable work amongst all French, English & German travelers, scientists, merchants & soldiers, who reported on the life & customs of these islands, from 1775 till 1860 “, as the American historian James A. Leroy commented on this publication of the German ethnographer in 1901. F. Jagor (1816-1900) was known as a perfectionist, unable to accept unfinished work which he would rather not deliver to his publisher. After returning from the Philippines in 1860, he spent the subsequent 13 years for further research on his work, now called a classic. He was one of the 1st Europeans to climb Mt. Mayon, explored the caves of the Visayas, describes his travels to Bicol, Samar & Leyte in such detail that many of his recommendations & suggestions are still executable until this very day.
