First edition, With the frontispiece “Mitglieder der Preussischen Expedition nach Ostasien…” which is missing in many volumes and apparently was not universally attached. The so-called Eulenburg expedition was a diplomatic mission headed by Friedrich Albrecht zu Eulenburg on behalf of Prussia and the German Customs Union with the aim of establishing political ties and concluding commercial treaties.with Japan, Thailand, and China. Spiess made an unscheduled side-trip to the Philippines aboard the French MS “Marne” and his positive impressions on this country show in his parting notes embarking for Hong Kong to re-join the Prussian Expedition. This Philippine sojourn is not mentioned in any other of the various publications by Eulenburg, Berg and other Expedition participants, making this tome a unique one. Among others, the following were expedition members: Lucius von Ballhausen (MD), Max von Brandt (attaché), Wilhelm Heine (painter), Albert Berg (artist), Karl Eduard Heusner, Fritz von Hollmann, Werner von Reinhold, Ferdinand von Richthofen and the author. The 3 Prussian East Asia Squadron war ships were the SMS Arcona, SMS Thetis and SMS Frauenlob; the latter was lost in a taifun before Japan.
