Description

VERY RARE photolithography map published in mid-1945 by the Army Information Branch of the United States Army Service Forces to keep domestic defense factory workers informed about military progress overseas. Dominated by a large central map of East Asia and the Western Pacific, the graphic clearly delineates Japanese-held territories alongside the expansive Allied island-hopping campaign, highlighting key strategic chains such as the Ryukyu, Marianas, and Bonin Islands. Positioned along the right margin are three detailed inset maps that focus on localized engagements, including American drives across Northern Luzon in the Philippines, Allied amphibious landings in Borneo, and Japanese retreats along the French Indochina border in Southern China. Flanking the main cartographic features are black-and-white photographic vignettes displaying military hardware, heavy bombers, transport operations, and naval vessels, all captioned to emphasize how domestic industrial manufacturing directly fuelled these tactical advances. Designed as both an informative bulletin and a morale-boosting piece of industrial propaganda, the entire composition serves to directly link home-front labour with ongoing frontline operations in the final months preceding the surrender of Japan in 1946.
