Description
antique photoprint views from “Enciclopedia Universal Ilustrada Europeo-Americana. Tomo XLVII”.
This print featuring two distinct historical scenes from the late 19th century Philippines.
1) Iglesia y colegio de la Compañía, Convento de Agustinos. Cuartel y Puerta de Santa Lucía: it depicts a stone bridge leading into one of the main gates of Intramuros, the historic Spanish fortified center. The area housed prominent religious and educational institutions, including properties associated with the Jesuits and the Augustinians.
2) Calle principal (la de la Escolta) de la ciudad: known as the “Broadway of Manila,”. Escolta Street was the city’s premier business and luxury shopping district during the Spanish and early American colonial periods. The photograph showcases traditional two-story bahay na bato commercial buildings with wide, fabric-shaded shop awnings lining the cobblestone street.
