Description
antique photoprint views from “Enciclopedia Universal Ilustrada Europeo-Americana. Tomo XLVII”.
This print features four prominent historic structures in Manila, Philippines from the late Spanish colonial or early American period.
1) Edificio de la Tesoreria: known as the Intendencia or Aduana Building in Intramuros. Designed by Spanish engineer Tomas Cortes, this customs house later housed the treasury department, the Philippine Mint, and early sessions of the Philippine Senate.
2) Hospital de San Juan de Dios: historically located along Calle Real in Intramuros. Founded originally in 1596 by a Franciscan lay brother, it served as a critical medical facility for centuries. The site in Intramuros is occupied today by the Lyceum of the Philippines University.
3) Casas Consistoriales: known as Ayuntamiento de Manila, historically located at Plaza de Roma in Intramuros. Known as the “Marble Palace,” this served as the city hall of Manila and housed the Spanish governor-general’s offices and supreme court. It was destroyed during World War II and reconstructed thereafter, the building now houses the offices of the Bureau of the Treasury.
4) Estación del ferrocarril: known as the historic Tutuban Railway Station (Manila Central Station) in Tondo. Opened in 1892 as the main terminus for the Ferrocarril de Manila-Dagupan (now the Philippine National Railways), it served as the bustling gateway to northern Luzon. The heritage building still stands today integrated into a commercial shopping complex.
