Description

woodcut engraving.

Depicts two specimens of the Philippine colugo (or Philippine flying lemur). It is taken from the famous work Tierleben (Life of Animals) by the German biologist and writer Alfred Edmund Brehm (1829–1884), first published between 1863 and 1869, which went on to be reprinted multiple times and translated into all major languages. The publication contains hundreds of antique animal prints — both black-and-white and colour — created by various artists and illustrators.

The Bibliographisches Institut was a German publishing house founded in 1826 in Gotha by Joseph Meyer. Over the years, it produced many major works, including the renowned encyclopedia Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, the travel guide series Meyers Reisebücher (published between 1862 and 1936), and the atlases Meyers Handatlas and Der Große Meyers Weltatlas, among others. Although almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, the company survives today as part of the Cornelsen Verlagsgruppe publishing group.
