Description

This EXTREMELY RARE original-colour lithograph map – a hardly known very collectible map by Ferdinand Blumentritt – illustrates the geographic distribution of ethnic groups and physical terrain across eastern Mindanao, Philippines, stretching from Surigao in the north to the Gulf of Davao in the South.

Synthesising field data gathered by the French explorer Dr. Joseph Montano (1879–1881) and the contemporary mapping of the Spanish Jesuit Missionaries, the map uses distinct pastel colour coding and bold lettering to delineate the territorial domains of indigenous ethnolinguistic groups, including the Bisayas, Manobos, Mandayas, Tagacaolos, Samales, Mangulangas, Moros, Mamanuas, and Tagabawas.

Topographically, it tracks the complete course of the Agusan River basin (Río Agusan) and its interior lake system, while detailing coastal bays, mountain ranges, and local settlements.
