Description
xxx [2] + 162pp., hardbound in special leather brown binding, decorated & lettered in gilt, with portrait frontispiece of Antonio Pigafetta & 13 monochrome illustrations. VERY RARE collector’s item.
Volume No. XIV (14). Second English edition.
This volume features the two most important early accounts of the circumnavigation and includes illustrations and facsimiles of the original documents.
The first work is the translation of Pigafetta’s “Primo viaggio intorno al globo terracqueo”, based on the original text of the Ambrosian codex translated by James A. Robertson, reproduced with slight corrections.
The second work, “De Moluccis Insulis”, is the English version of A letter from Maximilianus Transylvanus to the Most Reverend Cardinal of Salzburg, translated by Henry Stevens, which appeared in Johann Schöner (London, 1888), and represents the only other contemporary narrative of Magellan’s/Elcano’s circumnavigation.
