This postcard selection is reproduced from the extremely rare original 1863 Album publication of the late Dutch artist Madame Berthe Hoola van Nooten titled "Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de Java" (Flowers, Fruits and Selected Foliage of Java), that consisted of 40 chromolithographic plates of various subjects on the flora of Java.
Botanist, author and watercolorist, Mme van Nooten settled in Batavia (now Jakarta), Indonesia where she created artworks of local fruits and flowers. Forty of these works were later translated to 56 x 40 cm (22 x 15.75 in.) chromolithographs and published in a limited edition in Brussels, Belgium, in 1863 with the backing of the Queen of Belgium.
The topographical semblance and geographic proximity between Indonesia and the Philippines provides a beautiful overview of the exotic flora of Southeast Asia - historically known as India Orientalis.
